On October 24, 2017, the brand kaiki exhibited its spring/summer 2018 collection at BLOCK HOUSE gallery in Harajuku, Tokyo.
Mainly featuring women’s everyday wear, kaiki offers “certain tension in relaxation,” said the designer Kaiki Iio. It seems to the author that the designer gives clothes the power of gradually changing the mindset of those who wear them, because of the shape around the waist, or the use of quality materials for clothes for casual outing. Women can wear kaiki’s clothes for a long time. Because of the unique silhouette, kaiki’s items fit women of all ages. In spite of the broad-shouldered design, its pattern allows the fabric to smoothly follow the shoulder lines if a small woman wears it.
What interests me in a conversation with the designer is that, when he finds his favorite textile, he takes time and looks at it for a while before deciding whether or not to use it. He carefully chooses fabrics so that people can cherish clothes without getting bored. When men design women’s clothes, they tend to make something that suits their ideal. Male designers are better at “dressing” women as men and women have different preference in terms of what body parts to show or hide. I asked why kaiki’s concept is more like something that women tend to embrace. Kaiki said that the design is not so much based on his own ideal image of women as the idea of his friends.
It is a solid brand with primary focus on creating clothes that are in the daily life of people who wear them.
