YOHEI OHNO 2018SS Collection

On October 16, 2017, YOHEI OHNO unveiled its S/S 2018 collection at Amazon Fashion Week TOKYO. “Joy of creating,” says the designer Yohei Ohno, “is the theme of my creative process, which starts from the excitement I feel at material shops.”

Media often use the word “futuristic” to depict YOHEI OHNO. The designer’s unique use of materials and constructing garment probably give a futuristic impression. Some products feature thick and glossy enamel materials with adjustable draw cords, which are rarely used for clothes. Shirts have detachable sleeves with clips, not for convenience, but rather for leaving some “space” by choosing not to make it perfect clothing. People can freely interpret how to wear individual items, the designer said. The freedom to customize and the innovative design and shapes using unusual materials add a futuristic touch. Ohno first looks at a material and makes a pattern before designing something that is wearable. His design starts somewhere other than apparel. The idea and process create one-of-a-kind styles. YOHEI OHNO’s concept is to produce a process of making clothes. In the past, the brand released items using a bonding material that does not fray by hot-cutting. This simplified the sewing process. This product attracted attention for its approach to lower the bar of making clothes. Unlike items with highly unusual characteristics up to the last season, this season’s products are, in general, more accessible for those who wear them, for example, in terms of choice of colors such as red, blue, and navy. While maintaining YOHEI OHNO’s iconic products such as silver items and long gloves, the brand has broken new ground by employing rather popular materials not found in previous collections, such as dots, which are often associated with cuteness.
