kaiki 2021AW Collection

In March 2021, KAIKI showcased its new 2021 autumn/winter collection digitally on its website and official Instagram. For the second time, the brand presented at the official program of RAKUTEN FASHION WEEK TOKYO.

In the previous season, the COVID-19 pandemic hindered KAIKI from exploring new fabrics, the key element for the brand. This season, KAIKI started with making fabrics. What catches your eye in this season’s collection is a large houndstooth pattern. Use of three different types of threads produces an uneven surface and gives unique tactile texture.

KAIKI newly adopted wool from a rare sheep breed called Polwarth, which delivers the shiny and firm feel that the brand keeps seeking for, together with the soft texture of the wool.

The collection movie is again one-minute long like the last season. In a quiet, dimly-lit building, a man and woman wearing garments from the new collection pass each other nervously. Hinted by disquieting background music, the scene indicates the relationship between the two. Like a movie trailer, it makes viewers wonder how the story unfolds. The video for the previous season featured an ad-like engaging rapid succession of scenes. This season’s video leaves audience with somewhat an uneasy aftertaste. With two persons with a stern look and the violins over the electronic sound, the video comes with a deep message, atypical of a collection video, that the world with COVID-19 is not safe.
