In October 2020, tactor exhibited its new 2021 spring/summer collection in a room at a building in Shibuya. This season’s theme is “VOYAGE.”
After last April, due to the spread of COVID-19, people were asked to refrain from any activities involving physical contact, and many people had to stay home. The designer Yamamoto was among them. During this time, she thought about the joy of wearing clothes as she spent time calmly and orderly every day.
Conventionally, tactor’s collections have been designed to stand out on the street. For Yamamoto, these garments are not just jazzy but they have stories that wearers can tell, such as a garment worn by somebody they admire, or that associated with their personal memories. Importantly, these clothes are appealing to others. As the environment has changed and people spend more time at home, her approach to garment making has changed: Now, her focus is on personal satisfaction. With less use of tactor’s iconic vivid graphics and lamé, this season’s collection consists of subdued items. Special attention has been paid to fabrics that are comfortable to wear and finely tailored details.
The designer has developed her thoughts on good clothing in the new environment, i.e. the importance of being attentive to garment care from washing to storing, in addition to the choice of high-quality fabrics.
For example, this season’s items newly have a brand tag at the bottom, not intended to show off but for personal satisfaction of wearing tactor. The tag appears in a place where wearers can occasionally see it when they look in the mirror or while they are working at home. Shirts feature fringe with a handmade feel. One small touch to the items like this makes them something wearers can appreciate.
This season’s collection theme “VOYAGE” seems to have two meanings, graduation from “PUBLIC SCHOOL,” the last season’s theme, and the designer’s hope that wearers embrace the joy of going outside and cherish each garment as they put it in a bag.
