In March 2020, tactor exhibited its new 2020 autumn/winter collection in a room at a building in Shibuya, Tokyo. This season’s theme is public school.
For the first time, the designer Yamamoto showcased the collection through live streaming on tactor’s official Instagram account. The live video was filmed at Taito Designers-Village, former Kojima elementary school site refurbished as a facility to support young designers. This place has been Yamamoto’s atelier. As she is moving to a new work space, this season marked the last collection exhibited here. March is the month of graduation in Japan, and tactor also graduates from this place. The theme public school reflects the departure of the brand.
Throughout the live streaming, the background music was played at a low volume and the designer’s footsteps were heard. Watching the video, the sound of the heels on the old wood floor in silence brought back memories of my school days with slightly uneasy but nostalgic feelings. On the walls were drawings of the 2020 autumn/winter collection by the illustrator Haruka SHINJI. Yamamoto filmed each drawing carefully. Like rough sketches, they captured tactor’s unique design elements well. Then, Yamamoto walked to the racks where the 2020 A/W collection was on display, picked up and filmed the items, one at a time. After filming all items, she pointed her camera at the scenery through the window, and ended the live streaming. This short video showed to the audience the environment where Yamamoto had created the collection.
The collection highlights the brand’s distinctive designs. The previous season’s collection seemed to have been divided into a quiet line without patterns and a more intense line with lamé and foil prints. In the new collection, these two elements seem to have been fused together. Describing her previous 2020 spring/summer collection, Yamamoto commented that she had taken it easy and made items that she thought were cute. While keeping that stance, she brought forward her iconic designs with graphic collage and pleated lamé skirt, which resulted in a well-balanced collection.
