In March 2020, koll showcased its 2020 autumn/winter collection at its showroom in Daikanyama, Tokyo.
With the theme bright and somber, this season’s collection explores women’s fashion in the United States in the 1950s, the post-war period that marked the change in the way women dressed. Women started to embrace clothes with gentle curved lines instead of subdued modest wartime outfit. Western style came to Japan and was called New Look. The lifestyle in the U.S. that Japanese people had seen in cinema and dreamed of began to take root in how they dressed every day.
The new collection from koll features classical A-line, cocoon silhouette, and ribbon blouses. Items also include a shirring blouse, corset dress, top with camisole design, and other items emphasizing feminine silhouettes.
Since 2018, koll has incorporated classical styles. “It feels like I am looking through my mother’s old wardrobe to see what I want to wear now,” commented the designer Mayu Kusuhara, explaining her unique design focus. Many styles that remain popular through generations have time-tested universal decorations such as frills and ribbons. Kusuhara stays true to what she likes, explores the history of how her favorite styles have developed, looks at women’s take on life, and reflects findings on her collection.
