In October 2019, kaiki showcased its 2020 spring/summer collection at OZ gallery Studio in Shibuya, Tokyo.
Not much change has been made to this season’s collection. A solid two-piece set has a roomy silhouette with ankle-length pants that show socks, which is so kaiki. As for the iconic dresses, kaiki has employed patterned and shiny fabrics instead of solid ones to add some allure.
For several seasons, kaiki’s focus has been on “allure.” In the debut collection, it was not something in mind, according to the designer Iio. “Now, I pay more attention to the scenes where the clothes are worn by women,” he said.
With the 2020 spring/summer collection, which marks the ninth season of the brand, kaiki had photo installation during the exhibition. The brand has always taken a creative approach to lookbook photography for each season. At the same time, Iio has felt awkward about photos being consumed on social media. He decided to have a photography exhibition featuring large prints so that people can actually see developed photos.
Instead of showing off garments, kaiki’s photos almost seem to reveal “everyday life” of the model. My impression of the photography for the collection is “memories of traveling somewhere far away with a woman.” The warmth of the film and the facial expression of the model lost in thought give a nostalgic feeling. The same also holds true to the collection items. Iio took this opportunity to go through the archives of photos since the debut collection.
Shuya Aoki was employed as a photographer again like the previous season. The model is Serena Motola, who has achieved great success as an actress. This was the second offer after her appearance in kaiki’s debut collection. Iio had a foresight to employ her five years ago when she was still an obscure model.
