On March 23, 2019, koll presented its autumn/winter 2019 collection at Aoyama Polygon, Tokyo. This marked the brand’s first show.
The venue was furnished with classical western-style furniture. On stage, models were relaxing in a couch, writing a letter in a study, or applying lipstick in front of a mirror, representing an ordinary life of women. In the background was Edith Piaf, iconic chanson singer. It was just like a scene from an old French film.
This season’s items are themed around nostalgia. A shirt with abundant use of frills has ties around the neck and waist. A bra top features classical hooks, and a see-through dress has a corset design. A calm, floral-pattern top and bottom set with subdued colors brings back memories of good old days. As always, what makes koll unique is the combination of classical and modern materials, such as silver arms for a traditional- style item, or PVC for a jacket belt.
In the previous collection, koll showcased a lace pullover with gloves, which I described as the brand’s unique emphasis on the quality of being a woman. About this season’s collection, the designer Kusuhara said that the memories and emotions of old days are still alive in old things, which make them beautiful. The designer conducted a research on clothing in the 1920s and 1930s. This has inspired her to find a meaning in clothing that helps women live beautifully as a woman along with the times.
