In October 2018, koll presented its Spring/Summer 2019 collection in an exhibition. Along with the spread of LGBT movements, we have more opportunities to think about sex and gender. In the fashion industry, the word “genderless” is becoming common and more and more brands launch collections not for a specific gender. In such a trend, there are also designers that shed a light on sexuality, as koll’s collection for this season is based on the key concept “as a woman.”
“I am a woman and I suggest women’s clothes. I took a new look at something feminine and clothes that make women attractive,” commented the designer Mayu Kusuhara. This season’s collection features space and curves. Partially exposing décolletage and shoulders, the items are designed to show the natural charm of women. The items emphasize femininity: a top & bottom set with seemingly stripe patterns secretly features curves suggesting women’s body line, and a lace pullover comes with gloves.
To me, koll used to be a brand that gives conspicuous features to each item by using contrasting colors and materials, for example, a combination of fur and vinyl fabric. This season’s collection look book gives me an impression that strong elements prevail over the entire collection while the brand’s consistency is ensured with styling. Each item is simple and easy to coordinate, meaning that it is wearable for more women.
Before, koll’s collections were based on a clear image of women. This season’s collection, as represented by the keywords “as a woman,” seems to be something more personal to Kusuhara.
