On March 21, 2018, YOHEI OHNO unveiled its 2018 AW collection at polygon Aoyama during Amazon Fashion Week TOKYO.
Contemporary desk, chair, and floor lamp selected by Yohei Ohno set the stage and models in the brand’s new clothes were just chilling, leaning on the desk, in a presentation format. “I want people to feel more comfortable about the clothes they wear as a part of their daily life,” commented Ohno. Chic colors give a sense of unity throughout the collection, combined with familiar materials such as denim and corduroy. They look familiar yet somehow foreign because of an inorganic feel of the structural design inspired by interior and industrial designs, which are fused into the clothing items.
With the theme of blending into life, the new collection mainly features chic styles with minimal decorations. In the last show, YOHEI OHNO presented a stunning collection of highly unique items and styles. Some of them might have been a bit too ambitious for wearers. The last season’s collection highlighted the brand’s “futuristic” image. Now it makes sense to me that the ambitious mood that makes modern women feel hesitant has created that futuristic image.
YOHEI OHNO presented its new collection in the presentation format instead of the runway show like the last season. This change has made me think about the originality of the brand. In the runway show, the collection encapsulated the uniqueness of the brand solely in clothes, reflecting Ohno’s concept. This season, with minimal performance and decorations, the brand filled the stage with its iconic industrial elements and presented the collection as a life style. As Ohno said, it is a suggestion of clothing that women can identify with and that they can actually wear in their real life. With less performance, a smaller number of looks, and a fewer clothing elements, the collection reveals what Ohno really wishes to express.
