In March 2020, kaiki exhibited its new 2020 autumn/winter collection at Shibuya Hikarie.
The brand celebrated its milestone fifth anniversary with its first-ever video installation. “I wanted to make this season’s collection like a reunion,” commented the designer Kaiki Iio. Iio invited his friends, artists who have inspired him, and others he has interacted with to become involved in the collection. For example, in the 2020 autumn/winter season, kaiki added a knit for the first time to its collection. The knit is based on a motif by artist Akiha Yamakami, who is Iio’s friend from school. The video was produced by udocorg (Koji Udo). Udo is a prominent artist and the winner of the SHOWstudio Fashion Film Award 2019. Shuya Aoki joined as a photographer, who has been creating visual content for kaiki since 2019 AW. The photography session took place at Desperado, a boutique carrying selected brands including kaiki. This season’s collection reveals kaiki’s memories, bringing together people and places related to the designer.
Many items are loose fit but with a feminine touch such as slim waist and shorter jacket length. The knit created in collaboration with Yamakami is in vivid colors, which is uncommon for kaiki, and has a unisex silhouette. The collar of a jacket incorporates men’s jacket design, a new approach that the brand takes to make masculine elements more visible.
My personal recommendation is a glossy skirt. Its round shape with specially processed shiny fabric makes it look different depending on the light.
