In February 2020, YOHEI OHNO exhibited its 2020 autumn/winter collection in a room in Shibuya, Tokyo.
This season’s collection gives me an impression that YOHEI OHNO’s iconic structural shapes of clothing have taken root as the brand’s symbolic design. Basic colors such as beige, black, white, and gray make items suitable for various occasions, both formal and private.
On the brand’s official Instagram account are Man Ray’s works, which seem to have inspired this season’s collection. For example, a dress with a poncho has something in common with Man Ray’s emphasis on classic shapes and modern expression. A unique metal part is used for holding the poncho. A collarless dress has tucked sleeves to add volume, and slits at the bottom. A pair of pants are inspired by a fencing suit. They are elegantly finished using white corduroy fabric. The brand has newly adopted feminine design in a classic style with cool-headed expression.
Like in the previous season, YOHEI OHNO showcased a dress lineup along with the main collection. Beige and salmon pink items have been added to the all-black lineup of the last season. While keeping the base design of the main collection, the dress lineup highlights more refined and dressy items. By using a different set of fabrics and colors, the designer tries to shed a light on the collection from a different angle and transform it into our real clothes. This is how the designer Ohno “ages” the brand, as he described it.
