In March 2019, tactor showcased its new autumn/winter 2019 collection at Shibuya TOC Building in Tokyo. The theme is EXPOSE.
Unique simplicity is what differentiates this season’s collection from previous ones, with modest colors such as white, beige, green, and navy. The theme EXPOSE means revealing one’s true self. Instead of her iconic use of visually intriguing graphics and lame, the designer Yamamoto takes the brand’s unique approach to common items. For example, a long shirt has an asymmetrical design, combining firm cotton cloth and soft satin fabric to give the shirt various looks. The brand’s identity of bringing two different elements together is reflected on the changing silhouette with use of diverse textures, not on colors and patterns.
What has also inspired Yamamoto is the traditional Japanese kimono, which covers the whole body but reveals a sensual glimpse of the skin. This sensuality lies between the body and clothing, and “just a glimpse” makes women look graceful. The designer has expressed the sense of space by employing slightly shiny fabrics, or drapes for trousers so that fabrics move more flexibly, or a fair amount of fabric for a jacket with feminine body lines.
Behind the brand name “tactor” is the word “tactile.” The collection incorporates elements that touch our heart, such as the desire for something that is sensual and loose, or the allure of something hidden, not visually obvious.
“I want to highlight feminine elements that look good on women just because we are in this era, ” said Yamamoto. Gender diversity has become common such as homosexuality and transgender. In this society, “like a man, like a woman” may sound stifling. Yamamoto’s words reveal her positive attitude that “being a woman” should be respected in a sense that women have beauty as women.
