From March 20 to 24, 2018, tactor exhibited its new 2018 autumn/winter collection at Shibuya TOC building. This season’s theme is “MOIETY,” a deeply-rooted half, or an inseparable part, explained the designer Yamamoto.
Noteworthy in this collection is tactor’s signature print patterns hand-drawn by the designer herself, with a collage of geometric patterns, dots, and plants. Familiar yet somehow unexpected textile design sets the tone for the collection. Print on lame fabrics makes the items striking.
Yamamoto explained that the theme MOIETY (half) represents her underlying idea of finding beauty not in a single material but in a layer of different elements. Last season, the designer brought together elements of Japanese and Western clothes, with the theme “inBETEWEEN (in between contrasting things).” For two consecutive seasons, a mix of different elements constitutes the basis for her crafting. All the items in this season’s collection are designed by docking two elements such as textiles, patterns, prints and plain fabrics. A set of clothes made of cotton pile fabric is one example. The pants have the drop crotch style like sarouel trousers. But the designer chose a straight shape instead of a tapered shape like sarouel pants, suggesting a novel style without ending up with one element.
While tactor’s former items were something that can be worn on their own for formal occasions, this season’s collection also features daily clothes that go well with wearers’ wardrobe. tactor suggests a closet that covers all occasions, reflecting women’s lifestyle. I asked the designer what kind of women the collection would be for. “I have in mind a kind of women who do not let others influence their decision but have a strong will to make choices on their own,” said Yamamoto.
It seems that layering two elements, an integral part of the brand, reflects Yamamoto’s intention to suggest clothes that let wearers show their identity by
simply putting on tactor, which follows the clothing trend while giving a special touch to individual items and presenting them with design not in vogue.
